ABBA is a variety-disco, Euro-pop, swedish disco and
swedish pop swedish band created at the end of 1972 in
Stockholm by the quartet AGNETHA FÄLTSKOG (voice, born
on the 05/04/1950 in Jönköping), FRIDA (voice, born on
the 15/11/1945 in Narvik in the Norway), BENNY ANDERSSON
(synths/piano, born on the 16/12/1946 in Stockholm) and
BJÖRN ULVAEUS (guitar, born on the 25/04/1945 in
Göteborg, ex-THE HOOTENNANY SINGERS). BJÖRN meets BENNY in a party in Vastervik.
After the HEP STARS split in 1969, each boy meets his
girlfriend: for BENNY it will be FRIDA and for BJÖRN,
AGNETHA. All the 4 become THE FAITH FOLK QUARTET.
ABBA win the Grand Concours de l'Eurovision with "WATERLOO"
(#1 in the UK on the
04/05/1974 for 2 weeks, first of their 12 #1 in Ireland, first
of their 9 #1 in Germany on the 10/06/1974 for 3 weeks,
first of their 4 #1 in Finland and one of their 2 #1 in Norway). They
build their own recording studios, Polar Studios, where
other artists like GENESIS use to record tracks. For the
States, their greatest hit will be "DANCING QUEEN"
(#1 in the USA on the
09/04/1977 for one week, #1 in the U.K. on the 04/09/1976 for
6 weeks, #1 in Norway for 12 weeks, #1 in Germany on the
20/09/1976 one week, second of their 8 #1 in the
Netherlands and one of their 6 #1 in Australia for
8 weeks). After divorces of the 2 couples (BJÖRN and
AGNETHA in 1979 - BENNY and FRIDA in 1981), ABBA splits
in december 1982. FRIDA and AGNETHA will sing in solo. In
1984, BENNY and BJÖRN work on musical show "Chess"
with MURRAY HEAD. An ABBA museum is open in Stockholm in
2009.
